Flexo printing

The label, so simple and so complex at the same time, is the essential mean of communication for all products. We help you to discover the hidden aspects of this support : label manufacturing processes, technical data, optimization advice, …

The flexographic printing system is mainly used to print adhesive labels for various products: labels for food products, cosmetic products, and other products.

The flexographic printing process allows to print adhesive labels which will be packaged in the form of rolls on which the adhesive labels are affixed.

Depending on the method used to apply the adhesive labels on the products, manual or automatic application, it will be necessary to define the direction of the adhesive labels on the rolls obtained.

There are different rolling directions: either the adhesive labels are rolled up on the inside of the rolls or on the outside.

In addition to the rolling direction of the adhesive labels on the rolls, the reading direction of the adhesive labels also has an effect on the application of the labels: the adhesive labels can therefore be printed on the paper in the following reading directions:

  • Étiquette adhésive tête en haut
  • Head down adhesive label
  • Heads-up adhesive label left
  • Heads-up adhesive label right

FLEXOGRAPHIC PRINTING: HOW DOES IT WORK?

etiquette-impression

Flexographic printing is a relief printing system, which is close to typography. The printing form, either a plate or a sleeve, is made of photopolymer. The use of this printing process applies to the printing of self-adhesive labels, but also of corrugated cardboard or plastic or paper bags.

Flexographic printing enables the use of different types of inks:

  • Water-based inks
  • Solvent inks
  • UV inks

The type of inks to be used is defined according to the material to print and the support(s) to be printed. Each of the three types of inks presents its advantages and its disadvantages. In fact, the type of inks used to create an order is determined by several factors such as price, printing rate and the use of the printed products.

Flexographic printing offers different color combinations, depending on the printing equipment used: according to the number of plate holders (or printing cylinders) that a flexographic printing machine has, it is possible to print, for example, a four-color process plus Pantone colors, as well as a varnish (matte, glossy or textured), or even white, but also scented inks.

At the very end of the flexographic printing machine, and more precisely within the framework of the printing of adhesive labels, is installed a cutting tool which makes it possible to pre-cut the adhesive labels. Once the adhesive labels have been pre-cut to the desired shape, they are weeded to remove the unnecessary paper, then wrapped into a reel, and finally packaged.

Flexo printing units

In a modern flexo press, each printing unit, consists of the following elements:

  • Printing cylinder
  • Cliché
  • Back pressure cylinder
  • Anilox cylinder
  • Rubber roller
  • Rake
  • Ink fountain
  • Manual marking: longitudinal and transversal
  • Dryers on each group (UV, hot air, IR).

The process

During the printing process, the ink roller carries the ink to the anilox cylinder. As it rotates, the cells in the anilox cylinder come into contact with the ink, and any excess ink is wiped off by the wiper blade.

As the anilox cylinder rotates, the surface  is pressed against the raised areas of the plates mounted on the plate cylinder, ensuring ink transfer. The rotation of the plate enables the image to be transferred to the support.

Advantages

In-line flexo printing and rotative cutting allows the production of complex packaging in a single pass and with high quality.
